Description
Introduction Tourniquets began as crude constricting devices in early Roman times (second century AD) for use in amputation. Tourniquets began as narrow bands of cloth wrapped around an extremity above and below amputation sites to purposefully control bleeding. Smith and Williams (2004, p221) define tourniquets as 'a constrictive band placed tightly around a limb with the intention of compressing both arteries and veins to stop blood flow'.
