KARACHI -- Pakistan Medical and Dental Council has given permission to the medical institutions to adopt new curriculum. Hence, Dow University of Health Sciences has adopted a new model of integrated curriculum in undergraduate medical education. This was stated by Prof. Masood Hameed Vice Chancellor of DUHS while speaking at the conference on Capacity Building in Medical Education organized by DUHS on July 30th 2011. PM and DC, he said, had given us the task to change the curriculum and we have been able to do it. Various other medical universities have also made progress and they are also introducing changes in their curriculum. We as teachers, Prof. Masood Hameed said were never trained in medical education except a few workshops that we attended organized by the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan where it was taken up by Prof. Naim Jafri and his colleagues. It is extremely important that the faculty members are trained in training and evaluation methodology. Many courses are now running for faculty development at DUHS. Aga Khan University, he said, took the lead and started entry test and changes in the curriculum. Changes are needed to ensure that the medical graduates are able to meet international requirements. It does not mean that the old system did not work, in fact it worked well but with the passage of time, things have to change. Aga Khan University he went on to say has set a new trend in medical education and health care. There are over one hundred twenty universities in the country and among the medical universities after Aga Khan, DUHS comes the second as regards research output, he remarked.
